Product Safety Statement
Date: May 6, 2025Our Commitment to Product Safety & Transparency
At Nest Designs, the safety and well-being of children who use our products isn’t just a priority–it’s our founding principle. We’re sharing this statement to provide complete clarity and reassurance following recent questions raised during a U.S. customs inspection. As a family-focused company committed to transparency, we want to share the full facts about our rigorous safety standards and address the evolving regulatory landscape affecting cross-border shipments between USA & Canada.
Understanding the Recent U.S. Customs Concern
Recently, a Nest Designs product shipped from Canada to the U.S. underwent additional screening during a routine customs inspection. The agent conducted a preliminary assessment of the zipper on one of our Footed Sleep Bags for potential lead content. It’s important to understand that these field screening methods are just the initial step in comprehensive safety verification, and often result in both false positives and negatives – industry standards recognize that definitive safety determinations require accredited laboratory testing with precision equipment and standardized protocols.
In response, we acted immediately and thoroughly.
The zipper in question is sourced from the globally recognized brand YKK and is certified under the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 — one of the most stringent global standards for textile safety, particularly for products used by infants and children. Nest Designs conducts random batch testing on our products, including third-party lab analysis, to ensure compliance with international safety regulations. Our most recent independent testing, along with documentation provided directly by YKK, confirms that the zippers meet or exceed all established safety thresholds, with no detectable levels of lead or other harmful substances.
Nest Designs has responded swiftly with verified third-party lab results confirming that the products in question meet all applicable safety standards and show no detectable levels of lead. These reports have been submitted to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to ensure full transparency and regulatory compliance.
Nest Designs has also asked CPSC for both clarification on how testing is done, and to receive the actual test result as we’ve only received a written notification without any actual results. Once we hear back from CPSC, that information will be openly shared.
Update (May 6, 2025):
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has responded and confirmed that a handheld XRF (X-ray Fluorescence) analyzer was used for their initial field screening. As explained by the CPSC agent,“The XRF works by“firing”X-Ray Fluorescence at a product to get results”and no official test report can be provided. However, it's important to note that field screening is a preliminary assessment and does not offer the precision of laboratory-grade testing. Variables such as device calibration, testing conditions, and operator handling can all impact the results.
To ensure transparency and uphold our commitment to product safety, we have proactively submitted multiple product samples for independent re-testing across several accredited laboratories in different locations. This helps eliminate any potential bias and reinforces the accuracy of our findings; to date, all tests have confirmed that we meet regulatory safety standards. We have also been in contact with our zipper supplier, YKK, and they have issued an official quality assurance letter confirming that all zippers supplied to Nest Designs meet the lead content limits set by U.S. CPSIA standards. We will continually update reports as they come in and they can be found here or by product category below.

In response to concerns regarding the CPC (Children's Product Certificate), please note that it was submitted to the CPSC and is also available for public viewing here.
Navigating the Evolving Customs Regulations
Cross-border shipping and customs processes between Canada and the U.S. are becoming increasingly complex, especially as trade relations continue to shift. These changes can sometimes result in heightened scrutiny or unexpected delays — even when products fully comply with international safety standards. We’re actively engaging with customs authorities to advocate for clearer, evidence-based communication and resolution in situations like this.
In the meantime, we remain here for you and are committed to offering any support needed if you experience customs-related concerns while ordering from the U.S.
Our Ongoing Promise to You
As parents ourselves, we understand that nothing is more important than your child’s well-being. Every fabric we select, every component we use, and every product we create undergoes rigorous testing that exceeds regulatory requirements. We don’t just meet industry standards; we hold ourselves to a higher standard – the same one we demand for products used by our own children. This isn’t simply a business promise; it’s the foundation of our relationship with your family. We stake our reputation and our name on the safety of every item bearing the Nest Designs label.
With care,
The Nest Designs Team
